An officer was injured after being hit by a drunk driver

| Oct 15, 2020 | DUI

A police officer in New York has been hospitalized after being struck by a drunk driver. The officer was driving an unmarked vehicle while searching the highway for people driving under the influence. As he started to make a left turn, he was struck by another vehicle that was driving south on the same road. The officer suffered back and neck injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver left his vehicle after the accident and spoke to two officers who were stationed nearby. The officers realized that the man had been driving under the influence and arrested him. He was later charged with assault and DWI, as well as driving with a previous DWI conviction. An attorney experienced in DWI defense might handle the case.

Defense after a DWI charge

An individual might be charged with a DWI if police have reason to believe that they were driving under the influence of alcohol. To build a legal case against the individual, the police officers must have reasonable suspicion, read the person their rights and administer a sobriety test. If they fail to do any of these things, an individual might wish to hire an attorney to protect their rights.

An attorney might be able to review the case to ensure that the police acted lawfully during the incident. If not, they might be able to get the charges dropped altogether. They might also defend their client in court and argue for reduced charges and lesser punishments. Additionally, they might also be able to help clients receive a temporary license if their driver’s license was revoked.

An attorney might be able to handle a wide range of cases, including first-time offenses and charges of driving with a prior conviction.
