Ecstasy: A popular club drug

On Behalf of | Aug 27, 2018 | Firm News

There are many drugs that are on the streets in New York, not just the major drugs such as Fentanyl, heroin or cocaine. Club drugs are a particular problem, because of the risk that they could impact people of all ages and even be slipped into their drinks during a night out.

One of the most common club drugs is ecstasy. This drug is also known as MDMA, XTC, E, X, Eve, Adam, beans, love drug, peace, uppers, molly and many other nicknames. This drug comes in oral forms in most cases, requiring users to take it in capsules or tablets. Some people do crush it and snort it. Normally, this drug comes alongside others such as marijuana or alcohol.

Why do people use ecstasy?

Ecstasy causes feelings of euphoria, distortions in time, distortions in tactile experiences, increased energy, emotional warmth and distortions in perception. Used in an uncontrolled environment, it has the potential to be extremely dangerous to a person’s health, though. It increases the heart rate, raises the blood pressure, causes muscle tension, faintness, chills, sweating, blurred vision and other serious side effects. Most people who take the drug aren’t thinking about the negative effects and look forward only to the positive.

One of the more significant issues is that many ecstasy pills come in unknown concentrations. A person may take one and be fine but take another and overdose. Sometimes, they’re laced with different chemicals, which makes it possible for the person to suffer fatal consequences.

What should you do if you’re accused of possessing ecstasy?

In some cases, people are falsely accused of possessing ecstasy after overdosing or falling ill as a result of someone else spiking a drink or giving them an unknown pill for consumption. If you are under the impression that you’re taking a vitamin, medication for a headache or other kind of medication, then the sudden effects of ecstasy would likely catch you off-guard.

You should seek medical treatment immediately, and then talk to your attorney about any possibility of charges you face. Not everyone who has club drugs in their system or even in their pockets or purses knew that they had them or intended to use or sell them. Drug crimes are never truly black-and-white. It’s your right to speak out and explain your situation or to make the prosecution prove that you used ecstasy willingly and should face charges for that drug’s use.
